As a former resident of Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman, Ohio, I would not recommend sending a loved one there for nursing home care, especially due to the poor quality of administration there. When I had any complaints, they were not taken to the Grievance Committee as I requested and as required by the State Dept. of Health. The 2 STNAs that I complained about remained assigned to my room, against State requirements. They gave me the "silent treatment" and verbally insulted me on several occasions, without administrative correction. My main complaints were against the Director of Nursing, the Activities Director, and the C.E.O., all of whom were disrespectful towards me, and would not give me any constructive feedback regarding my complaints against them. The Pastors also censored unduly my Bible Trivia classes with other residents, while visiting lay, church members were free to conduct their sessions without censorship. For instance, I was told by the Corporate Pastor not to be "gory" and not to use the words "hell" or "blood" in the resident group. What about the blood of Jesus? The corporate Lutherans that own the facility are a splinter group from the original Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod, and do not believe the Bible is without error in matters of faith and morals, while endorsing gay marriage and gay pastors as acceptable! I do not see this facility as being an example of our Good Shepherd. Both residents, family members, and the staff are subject to rigid maintenance of the unhealthy status quo of the company itself, which is only rated "one-star" out of a five-star rating system by the State, which places it well below-average in meeting State guidelines for nursing homes. Many residents at Shepherd are in their 80s, from America's Greatest Generation, which deserves the best of nursing home care, not the care provided by very poor overseers. Many of the Staff are well aware of these problems, but remain there out of their heartfelt love for the residents. Spiritually, it is my opinion that my religious freedom was wrongly restricted there, and that the residents and staff are healthier than the administrators. The Nursing Home Administrator there, who is a friend of mine, suddenly resigned just before I left, and the leadership was blind to why she left. It's obvious to me that it was due to the poor, overly-regimented leadership that tends to deny or overlook the truth of the matter, when a problem occurs.
